Introducing Porthpean House – Weddings for 20-30
When I was introduced to Martin Petherick, the owner of this unique period beach house by Hazel Parsons of When I was introduced to Martin Petherick, the owner of this unique period beach house by Hazel Parsons of Out of the Ordinary Weddings we knew we were on to something special. I’d seen the property in Richard Curtis’ romcom About Time, a few years ago and I was intrigued to see it in the flesh, as it were.
Driving down the country lanes from St Austell towards the coast the trees meet in the middle and there’s signs of nature fighting through the road in places – I knew I was off the beaten track. As I drew in to the property through the large wooden gates and had my first sight of the sea and the house my jaw dropped. This really is the venue that combines a beachside wedding with the most beautiful, authentic period property.
What’s it like inside Porthpean House?
This beautiful property has been in Martin’s family for 5 generations and has been lovingly maintained and retains many period features. You enter through large double doors into the long long wide corridor that links the drawing rooms (yes that’s a plural), study, dining room and the old smoking room.
Every room on this ground floor has it’s own unique charm and you’ll find many original paintings, shelves of antique books and even the most beautiful baby grand piano. The dining room is a particular wow, lined with bookshelves, its own fireplace and it can seat from 6 to 22 with leaves being inserted or removed as required. Finally the old smoking room, now called the games room is set up by day as a room for relaxing with a huge TV for films, comfy sofas, board games and jigsaws and table football – but if you choose to wed here this room can be either your ceremony room or your dinning area, meaning you can seat up to 30 guests indoors for dining.
I have to confess to being mildly distracted as Martin showed me round these rooms as they all have front-row views over the pristine lawn to the sea. The two rooms at each end of the front of the house have huge bay windows and French doors opening up onto the gardens and that view – with these door open you really do feel like the outside has come inside.
Off the corridor to the back of the house is a labyrinth of narrower corridors leading off to all the practical rooms: two kitchen (yes two!) a pantry and a gents toilet. Thoughtful design means you hardly notice these rooms unless you need them!
Venturing upstairs via the grand staircase with I was struck by most amazing roof light above the stairwell that lets light flood into the area, making it the perfect bridal entrance. Upstairs there‘s 12 bedrooms with two fantastic options for the bridal suite with huge bay window and those views again. You and your guests will not be suffering from a shortage of bathrooms either as there are 5 all together!
Add to this The Lodge, a beautifully renovated smaller cottage in the grounds that can sleep up to 6 and you have a stunning wedding stay venue for up to 20 - 30 people.
Outside the large gardens are tended to by Rob the gardener – even in winter I can report striped lawns, raked paths and a bursts of colour from the prize winning Camellia collection that Porthpean House is home to. They make the perfect backdrop to some of your outdoor wedding photography. In fact, if we speak nicely to Martin you may be able to use some of these blooms in your wedding flowers. Just as I thought we’d see it all I was shown the secret path from the garden directly on to the beach. A gently curve of sand, softly rolling waves and a view along the South Cornwall coast to die for. The winter sun sparkled on the sea even in the depths of winter. For me the lack of people during the winter months make this a truly fabulous winter wedding venue.
When you hire Porthpean House you have all of this to you and your nearest and dearest to enjoy.
