Riddles Court is a place where history, romance and the best Scottish hospitality combine to provide the alchemy that makes intimate weddings and elopements held here so very special. We’re so pleased to have found this absolute gem situated in the heart of the Royal Mile, Edinburgh! It’s hidden in plain sight and as you enter from the bustle of the Royal Mile you will feel a real sense of calm and awe wash over you as the seclusion afforded by this beautiful place sinks in. All of this and it’s just a short walk from Edinburgh Castle, St Giles Cathedral and for ease of picking up your wedding certificate, Royal Mile Registry Office.
A choice of spaces to suit your wedding day requirements
Flexibility is unusual when it comes to period properties, designed centuries ago. However, one of the aspects that makes Riddles Court stand out for us is how well suited it is to all the various sizes of intimate weddings: Elopements for 2, micro-weddings for 6 – 20, intimate weddings for 20-40 and slightly larger and small-scale weddings for 40-60. The secret is the choice of rooms and spaces that you have access to when you have exclusive hire of Riddles Court.
Riddle’s Court offers a collection of beautiful rooms each with its own intriguing history, stunning period decoration and original working fireplaces. Although you are welcome to arrange your own decor to your chosen rooms, you’ll find that each room is exquisitely styled and can easily be used as is, or with very little additional work. It’s for you to decide how little or how much you wish to bring your own vibe to these wonderful spaces.
You can choose from:
The Library Room
This is named after the subscription library situated in the building in the 1850s. It was one of the first libraries to be open to the general public. This south-facing room is spacious and airy. It’s easy to imagine anything from an elegant wedding breakfast, a grand ball or a traditional ceilidh enjoyed by up to 60 guests.
The Geddes Room
‘By leaves we live’. This quotation from Patrick Geddes, one of Scotland’s foremost environmentalists, perhaps explains the many vibrant leaves, plants and flowers portrayed in the stunning hand painted ceiling of the Geddes Room. It was commissioned as part of Geddes’ University Hall Scheme in the early 1900s, and depicts messages of ecology, philosophy and education for all. With its stylish panelled walls and captivating ceiling, the Geddes Room is fully accessible and seats up to 60 guests for a ceremony and 40 for a meal. It is a truly unique place to exchange your vows, particularly for couples with a shared interest in ecology and conservation or connection to the University of Edinburgh.
The Seton Room
This room is named after Alexander Seton, Chancellor of Scotland in the reign of James VI, in the early 1600s. The ceiling in this room is a magnificent example of the type of plasterwork which was the height of fashion in Scotland in the seventeenth century. The bay window booths were added as part of Geddes’ restoration and have amazing views across Edinburgh to the Pentland Hills. This is the perfect space to take a quiet moment with your loved one, whether it be to sign the registry or to have a celebratory glass of champagne as newlyweds. The picturesque booths provide the perfect photogenic corner for a moment of reflection. Ideal for elopements or small ceremonies, the Seton Room is perfect for a cosy and intimate celebration.
The Kings Chamber
Imagine, after a wonderful wedding day, slipping away to the onsite honeymoon suite, the King’s Chamber. The bedroom with its 16th century painted beams was once used by King James VI of Scotland to host a Royal dinner party for the Duke of Holstein. The romantic and private apartment offers a modern kitchen, open plan living space and ensuite shower room right in the heart of Edinburgh. It’s the ideal place to relax and reflect on your big day. From the luxurious king size bed you can admire the intricate, exquisite detailing on the stunning original painted beams above.

Don't Take Our Word For it...
"We had a wonderful wedding at Riddle's Court. We booked the venue, unseen, in early summer 2020, and from the first enquiry the team were incredibly professional, helpful and supportive, with a genuine warmth and enthusiasm for the success of our wedding day.
We were organising the wedding across the pandemic and the team did a wonderful job to help and support our enquiries, being very professional while always working and communicating government restrictions clearly, but being as flexible as they could be, within those rules.
The venue was beautiful and we were thrilled with the choice. It had a wonderful ambience. Our guests all commented on what a great location it is. It’s perfect to be in the centre of the city, and also very close to the registrar’s office for collecting and dropping of the relevant paperwork."

"Where do we being? We cannot rate Riddle's court enough. Gail and Roseanne were wonderful. They were helpful, understanding and made our micro-wedding feel full of happiness. We appreciate how much Riddle's had to adapt due to restrictions, but it felt no less a wedding.
The Geddes Room was divine! The original features and historic beauty made it a very special place for us. We loved the ceilings especially! They are truly amazing. Being able to stay over in the King's chamber was great for getting ready in the morning, less rushing and sleeping under the ancient beams was sublime.
Thank you once again for making our wedding day so memorable and sharing it with us."

"A fantastic, intimate venue perfect for our small wedding.
After looking around at many locations in Edinburgh, we settled on Riddle's Court after falling in love with the aesthetic and architecture of the place. We are a Canadian couple and weren't able to see the venue in-person until the day before the wedding. So Riddle's was perfect because it was already so beautiful, it didn't need a lot of decor to make it shine and we wanted to keep it simple coming from overseas.
Our contact, Louise, was extremely helpful in getting us the information we needed to make decisions from afar. As the bride, I chose to stay overnight in the King's Chambers, and it was such a good idea to be that close! Everything ran so smoothly day-of, our wedding party of 16 people couldn't stop talking about the amazing location we chose!"
